Your Guide to Packing and Planning the Quintessential Southern Picnic

With lush landscapes, waterfront views, and delicious lunch options to choose from, there’s no better way to savor a Southern summer than by planning a picnic. We’ll guide you through the essentials of packing and planning your picnic so all you have to do is choose the guest list.

Finding the Perfect Spot
While the beaches of Hilton Head Island are the obvious choices for a sunset picnic, we recommend spreading your picnic blanket out along the banks of the May River for unbeatable views of the marshlands and its water birds. You might also consider choosing a park near Old Town Bluffton or setting up below one of the Lowcountry’s iconic oak trees.

The Essential Spread

  • Pimento Cheese Sandwiches: A true Southern classic, pimento cheese sandwiches offer a delightful blend of creaminess and tang.
  • Fried Green Tomatoes: Crispy, tangy, and slightly tart, fried green tomatoes are a beloved Southern delicacy. We top ours with a creamy cajun tomato sauce and serve them along with cornbread.
  • Deviled Eggs: These delightful bites, with their creamy filling and hint of tanginess, are a must-have for any Southern gathering. Sprinkle them with paprika or experiment with flavors like bacon or dill for a unique twist.
  • Watermelon Salad: Beat the summer heat with a refreshing watermelon salad. Tossed with fresh mint, feta cheese, and a tangy vinaigrette, this dish offers a burst of flavors that balances out your rich main dishes.
  • Sweet Treats: We’re big on sweets in the South, which is why you can’t forget to stop by The Cottage to pick up your custom order of cookies, pastries, or cakes.

The Supplies

  • Picnic Basket or Cooler: Invest in a sturdy picnic basket or cooler to keep your food and drinks fresh and well-organized.
  • Utensils and Napkins: Don’t forget to pack disposable or reusable utensils, napkins, plates, and cups for a hassle-free picnic experience.
  • Picnic Blanket: Opt for a spacious and comfortable picnic blanket to provide seating for your guests. Consider adding a waterproof layer underneath for added protection.
  • Sunscreen and Bug Repellent: Protect yourself from the sun’s rays and pesky insects by bringing along sunscreen and bug repellent.
