Foods to Savor During the Last Days of Summer

In the Lowcountry, the season for summer produce is coming to an end. Crates of juicy peaches and ripe tomatoes will soon give way to apples, sweet potatoes, and squash. But it’s not over yet! There’s still time to savor your favorite summer foods before it’s officially fall. Here’s what to eat in August and September while these ingredients are still at their peak.

  1. Tomatoes. Nothing says summer quite like a shiny, ripe tomato. Try our savory tomato pie, which we make with cheeses, herbs, and a flaky pie crust, or our famously irresistible fried green tomatoes. Our twist on the classic dish allows you to taste the flavors of the Lowcountry in every bite. We pair our fried tomatoes with cornbread, cajun tomato cream, and shrimp.
  2. Summer salads. Salads are a summer staple for a reason: they’re refreshing and still so satisfying. Our not-so-basic salads are sure to satisfy all your fruit and veggie cravings (and then some). Try our Avocado Caprese with Grilled Shrimp, Grand Caesar, or Fish Taco salad for a lighter twist on your favorite foods.
  3. Peaches. Located only a few miles from “The Peach State,” the Lowcountry’s climate and soil quality produces some of the best peaches in the country.  These fruits taste great straight out of the crate, but they taste even better when made into a pastry in our bakery.
  4. Shrimp. Summer is the height of shrimp season, and the daily hauls on the coast yield the best selection of shellfish we see all year – and that’s saying something. Shrimp is a staple on our menus all year round, but now’s the time to get your seafood fix. Try a traditional dish like Gumbo, Jambalaya, or Shrimp ‘n Grits.

At The Cottage, we love using seasonal ingredients in all of our gourmet dishes. Come soak up the last few days of summer with us by enjoying a sweet tea and salad on the patio or a fruit pastry and coffee from our bakery.
